Tired of the nonstop fearmongering and doom and gloom in the news? Turn off the TV/computer and come join us outside as we go on a Metrocard adventure to explore Roosevelt Island and witness a sunset over Manhattan

ABOUT ROOSEVELT ISLAND: Once closed to the public, today Roosevelt Island is home to a residential community and a number of parks and landmarks. At the island’s southern end, the Louis Kahn–designed Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park offers public programming and family-friendly events. Also in the historical vein: the Renwick Ruin, a former smallpox hospital; the Octagon tower, the remnants of an insane asylum; and, on the northern tip, a 19th-century lighthouse anchoring a park from where visitors can get wide-angle views of NYC.

GETTING TO ROOSEVELT ISLAND: Make your own way to the Roosevelt Island subway station on the F train line by 2PM. We'll meet OUTSIDE the station and proceed from here.

AGENDA: Once on the Island, plan to walk around the ENTIRE island from one end to the other end, starting at the FDR Four Freedoms Park and all the way around to the other end to take in views from the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse. Make sure your camera is fully charged - there are many, many scenic photo-ops in store.

SUNSET is at around 4:30PM.

WALKING PACE: LEISURELY - NO SPEED DEMONS PLEASE - and no one will be left behind. Plenty of stops for photo-ops and taking in the sights.

DURATION: I can't guarantee finishing time hope do hope to finish by no later than 5:30PM-ish. But you can leave on your own at any time.

AT THE END OF THE NIGHT, you can take the Roosevelt Island Tramway for an aerial view of Roosevelt Island and Manhattan. The Tram will drop you off at E60th Street and Second Avenue on the Manhattan side. Tram fare is $2.75 (same as MTA subway and buses) and you can use the Metrocard.

WEATHER: Rain, snow, polar vortex cancels walk.

LIABILITY WAIVER: come prepared, hold no one liable, participate at your own risks, etc, etc.
